Fort Pierre, South Dakota

In 1743, Louis Verendrye and his brother planted a lead plate on a hillside overlooking Fort Pierre claiming the land for Louis XV, King of France.  The plate was un-earthed accidentally in 1913 by school children and is on display in the Cultural Heritage Center. 

The monument marks the spot where the plate was discovered.  Overlook view of Missouri River.
