Welcome to the Missouri River .. The longest River in America!

Missouri River Information from St. Louis, Missouri to Three Forks, Montana ~ America's longest River!

The Missouri River Basin region is filled with enchanting natural features. This is the land of the Big Sky, the Badlands, the Black Hills and "purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain." Vacationers from all over the country are drawn to the varied landscapes and myriad year-round outdoor recreational activities.

Adding to the region's natural beauty as attractions for visitors are some of the Corps of Engineers' most popular lakeside recreation areas. Corps lakes in the region range from very large ones on the Missouri River in the Dakotas and Montana to small multipurpose projects in Nebraska and Colorado. These projects serve numerous purposes, such as keeping the Missouri open to navigation, flood control, water supply and irrigation, and, of course, recreation .

The Corps of Engineers Missouri River Information Center was developed to help travelers along the Missouri River. Whether you need lake level or powerplant discharge information or need to order a river/lake map, we are here to help you.

The Corps of Engineers constructed six hydropower dams on the Upper Missouri River creating Ft. Peck Lake (Ft. Peck Dam), Lake Sakakawea (Garrison Dam), Lake Oahe (Oahe Dam), Lake Sharpe (Big Bend Dam), Lake Francis Case (Ft. Randall Dam), and Lewis & Clark Lake (Gavins Point Dam). There are no locks incorporated in any of these dam structures to accommodate the passage of boats from one lake to the other on the river. In order to make a journey up the river you will need to make arrangements to portage or trailer your boats around the dams. This service is not provided by the Corps of Engineers.
